So who was the best-dressed at the 2011 Grammy Awards? Who was the worst-dressed? Thank goodness you have me to tell you…
The best-dressed was…drum roll please…newcomer Jenna Ushkowitz, one of the stars of the smash Fox TV show, Glee. She wore a nude dress which was wrapped, almost gift-like, in black tulle. The organza-like wrapping culminated in a bow, slanted at an insouciant angle, on the bodice. The bow’s sheerness, not-too-large size, and position saved it from being cloying. And unlike Rhianna’s semi-nude look, which admittedly showed off what a great body she has but bordered on porno, Jenna’s was both sexy and appropriate for a major event like the Grammys, with the skin- like dress peeking through the black netted bands. The dress, combined with a simple square black bag, hot yet complementary black heels, and understated jewelry, really showed off Ms. Ushkowitz’s black, wavy hair, creamy skin, and pretty, luminous face. The whole youthful yet elegant look seemed to give us a window into the young actress’s personality. And this is one gift we’d love to get. And now for the part you’ve been waiting for…come on, you know you want it…the worst dressed. Well, it didn’t take a rocket scientist, or any kind of scientist, to see that it was…drum roll again…Nicki Minaj. All I can ask, in as subtle a way as I can, is: WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, NICKI?! I mean, it was bad enough that the outfit was leopard print everything – but even the shape of the…dress?…tunic?…was unattractively pouffy at the bottom, sported unnecessarily asymmetrical sleeves, and then had the unmitigated nerve to include a (matching leopard-print, of course) neck scarf. My senses were further assaulted by leggings of…that’s right, leopard skin, not to mention matching (yes, leopard-skin again) shoes. I don’t know if I’m more upset with Ms. Minaj or with designer Givenchy, who was psychotic enough to design this mess. As if the outfit weren’t enough, and believe me, it was, Nicki sported a Bride of Frankenstein (literally) hairdo. Yup, a standing-up-straight white hair obelisk, complete with black stripe. With, of course, more leopard-skin for the bangs and…I guess…sideburns.
No, I’m not making this up. Lord knows I wish I were. I understand you want attention, Nicki Minaj, but do you have to make us physically ill to do so?
Well, that’s my wrap-up of the best and the worst from this year’s Grammys. Thank you, ladies, for giving us something to dish about!
