With the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony right around the corner, we’re on the home stretch of this year’s awards season in Hollywood. Award shows like the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards are as popular for fashion as they are for acting. Ceremonies give the stars a chance to shine and show off their red carpet style, and there were lots of hits and misses this awards season.
Who got it right on the red carpet this year? Here’s a rundown of this season’s top five best dressed actresses at the 2011 Golden Globes and 2011 SAG Awards.
2011 Golden Globe Awards Best Dressed Actresses: The Green Movement
Many of the best dressed actresses at the 2011 Golden Globes gravitated toward shades of green, one of the hottest colors of the season. Most of my picks for top five best dressed actresses at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards chose the color green for their gown, including the stunning (1) Catherine Zeta-Jones in Monique L’Huillier and (2) Mila Kunis wearing an emerald, one shoulder Vera Wang dress.
(3) Natalie Portman stood out from the crowd in her Viktor & Rolf gown, a soft column of pale pink accented by a single bright red Swarovski crystal rose. Mom-to-be (and best actress winner) Portman was glowing, and in my opinion, her look was complemented by her upswept hair, Dior makeup, and her red Dior clutch. Natalie Portman lands on my best dressed list for dressing in a way that enhanced and celebrated her figure while remaining classy and elegant on the red carpet.
(4) Angelina Jolie stole the spotlight in a sparkling green long sleeved Atelier Versace gown, and she vies with (5) Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani Prive for best dressed honors at the 2011 Golden Globes. Both actresses looked impeccable; however, I choose Anne Hathaway as best dressed actress at the Golden Globes because her outfit was so unexpected.
Hathaway donned a rosy-bronze colored, sequined sheath that was quite visually interesting, but when she turned around and showed off the sheer panel that gave her dress the illusion of being “backless,” she was truly breathtaking. Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway always bring old school Hollywood glamour to the red carpet. At the 2011 Golden Globes Jolie was elegant but safe, but Hathaway was the risk taker, and she successfully pulled off her dramatic look (earning her my best dressed nod).
2011 SAG Awards Best Dressed Actresses: The Ladies in Red
The 2011 SAG Awards showed off a real grab bag of different looks, with everything from 70s chic, to jumpsuits to a ribbon of red gowns adorning the red carpet. My picks for top five best dressed actresses at the 2011 SAG Awards feature an eclectic mix of fashion, but there was a strong theme of ladies in red.
The 70s is emerging as an important spring fashion trend, but it’s not always easy to pull off this look (without attention to detail it can often veer into caricature). (1) Lea Michele from “Glee” is my first choice for best dressed actress at the 2011 SAG Awards, and she got her 70s inspired look completely right. Michele channeled 70s siren and icon Bianca Jagger by wearing a pale sparkly Oscar de la Renta gown; her hair was loose and flowing, her makeup soft and subtle, her total look evoking the days of Studio 54.
(2) Natalie Portman continued her awards season winning streak at the 2011 SAG awards, taking home the Best Actress prize yet again for her work in the highly acclaimed film “Black Swan.” Portman was also a winner on the red carpet, claiming victory as one of the evening’s best dressed actresses. She again dressed her pregnant figure in a way that enhanced her form while remaining classy, tasteful and sophisticated. Natalie Portman wore a white Azzaro gown and accentuated her look with soft, pretty makeup and a classic hairstyle.
(3) Tina Fey was another best dressed actress at the 2011 SAG Awards, and the ladies in red owned the red carpet that night. Tina Fey has sometimes been criticized for her fashion choices and she’s landed on some worst dressed lists. Fortunately for Fey, she was vastly improved at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, and no one could knock her for her extremely glamorous and totally appropriate red gown by Oscar de la Renta. (4) Julianna Margulies, also in vivid red, wowed the audience as she picked up her 2011 SAG Award for “The Good Wife” in an elegant Yves Saint Laurent gown.
If the Screen Actors Guild handed out an award for Best Dressed Actress at the 2011 SAG Awards, hands down the winner would be actress (5) Mila Kunis, resplendent in Alexander McQueen. Just like Hathaway, Kunis earns kudos for being a real risk taker at this year’s awards. Her flowing red McQueen gown was layered with multiple hues that gave it visual interest, and her loose hair and soft makeup complemented her look. Mila Kunis, so memorable in McQueen, made a real impact on the red carpet; this is why, out of all the evening’s ladies in red, she’s the 2011 SAG Awards best dressed actress.
The red carpet at the annual Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards is always an excellent foreshadowing of what’s to come for the Oscar ceremony. If this year’s awards shows are any indication, the 2011 Academy Awards will feature a rainbow of brightly colored gowns, as saturated colors enable actresses to stand out from the crowd as they walk the red carpet. Anne Hathaway is one of the best dressed actresses in Hollywood, and it will be exciting to see her look at the 2011 Oscars as she co-hosts the ceremony with actor James Franco. To find out what the stars will be wearing on Oscar night, don’t miss the eighty third Academy Awards on Sunday February 27, 2011 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
