Red Wing, Minnesota is a bustling town located right on the Mississippi river. Whether you’re a local or just visiting you’ll find many warm and welcoming places to eat, shop, and play. If you’re looking for a place to grab a quick lunch and/or pick-me up here are few of my favorites.
Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop
Located in the heart of downtown Red Wing at 410 West Third St., Hanisch Bakery and Coffee Shop is the spot we choose to take our out-of-town guests. The entrance to this quaint hometown eatery leads you to the small bakery room, where cases of glass display the creatively decorated cookies, donuts, and cakes. The air is filled with the fresh smell of sweets being made. You’ll take a slight right and enter into their small deli style eatery. Chalkboards hold the day’s special and eatery menu. Patrons can choose from a variety of mouth watering options from soup, sandwich, flatbreads, and made to order paninis. After ordering you will be asked what you would like to drink, you can choose from a coffee shop menu of familiar frothy drinks or you can cozy up with a ceramic coffee mug and choose from about ten different freshly brewed canteens full of the liquid bliss. There are two seating rooms where patrons can choose between a large group table and private booths. Enjoy your coffee of choice while you wait for your food to arrive. It’s a delightful place to stop whether it’s a quick run in for a cup of Joe or a sit down lunch.
Best of Time Bookstore and Coffee Shop
Recently added to the Best of Time bookstore is the coffee shop. Best of Time Bookstore, located at 425 West Third St., is kiddy corner and across the street from Hanisch Bakery. The coffee shop offers a variety of drinks which you can pair with your choice of muffin. If you’re looking for a quick lunch they offer sandwiches made by a local downtown restaurant. Sip your latte and nibble your sandwich while sitting at one of their cozy tables surrounded by enticing books. Soothing music plays overhead just loud enough to lull you into a peaceful Zen mode. It’s a quaint place to meet a girlfriend for coffee and their convenient kid’s area will keep your little ones entertained while you enjoy a few moments to yourself.
Red Wing Confectionery
Holding true to the artistic vibe of this beautiful river city is the Red Wing Confectionery. Just a jog over from the St. James Hotel and doors down from one of the biggest tourist attractions in Red Wing, The Red Wing Shoe Company, this little chocolate and coffee shop sits at 323 Main St. You’ll be enchanted by the several murals that hang on the wall depicting the story of Little Red Riding Hood. You can choose from a full menu coffee shop or if you have a sweet tooth they offer several varieties of old fashioned ice cream. When you first enter the shop you will be embraced by the familiar sweet smell of chocolate. The treats are made on site. If you get there at the right time you’ll be able to view choice treats being created. Coffee and chocolate, two of life’s favorite pleasures in one place, a fantastic combination! Whether you’re taking your coffee to go or sitting at one of their elegant tables you won’t want to miss this cozy confectionery and coffee house.
These are just a few of my favorite places, sadly there were a few more funky hangouts downtown that have now been closed down. If you ever get the chance to visit Red Wing make sure to stop in and say, hello. Your taste buds will be glad you did!
