Jan. 30, 2011 – Thanks to CNN’s television coverage of the red carpet before the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, we were lucky to get an up-close look at the dresses and learn who was wearing who as far as designers. Who has the fashion “win” of the night and who should have stayed home or raided someone else’s closet? While the evening was filled with many beautiful gowns and many “what were you thinking” outfits, narrowing it down to what can be considered the best dressed and the worst dressed was a little harder than you might think.
My best-dressed pick for the evening went to a very non-traditional, yet stunning, red carpet choice. Julie Bowen of ABC’s “Modern Family” hit the red carpet in a stunning and elegant black pantsuit by Catherine Malandrino. To step away from the traditional gowns of the evening, this choice was a bold move and she pulled it off in spectacular fashion. The 40-year-old mother of three, including 1-year-old twins, looked radiant. With a drop neckline nearly to her waist and in a halter top fashion, the dark black was a beautiful contrast to her free-flowing straight blond hair. The upper neckline straps had a beautiful silver embellishment on each side which drew attention to the neckline. The back was a typical halter fashion and was open to near her waistline. The pants could have easily passed as a straight-lined skirt as they were easily flowing. She accessorized with a beautiful silver bracelet and ring, and just presented a stunning and elegant look.
My worst-dressed pick of the SAG Awards had to be Jane Lynch from FOX’s “Glee,” wearing a lavender purple dress by designer Ali Rahimi. This tank top style dress with a pleated left chest and a gathered right chest just looked as though it did not fit her right. The top section of the dress was a complete misfit, almost as if it had been made and fitted for someone else and Lynch just grabbed it last minute.
The bottom portion of the gown only got worse. Had the designer left it with a beautiful flowing gown bottom, it may not have made the worst-dressed category. However, Rahimi added what looked like a purple marshmallow from the waist line to midway down the dress. In all honesty, it made it look like she was wearing a beautiful colored crumpled up garbage bag. While the light lavender color was nice, it did nothing for Lynch’s pale complexion and made her look very washed out.
Granted, it was a step up from the sweat suits we are used to seeing Lynch in as Sue Sylvester in “Glee,” and in all honesty a nice silky black track suit would have been a step up and much more eye-appealing than the lavender marshmallow gown she was wearing. Sorry Jane, but it was a definite “miss.”
