Every year my husband and I host a Christmas party for his work colleagues. This year we tried some new food products for the event. We not only made our own favorite dishess, but we also purchased a few treats from B.J.’s.
One of the big hits of the party was the European Mini Eclairs from Berkley & Jensen. They came in a 17.5-oz tub that equaled 780 grams.
There are 48 eclairs or about 10 servings in each tub of Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs. Five individual pieces equals a single serving. Each serving represents 220 calories. Unfortunately, more than half – – 120 – – are fat-related.
There are 13 grams of fat in each serving of Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs. Of that amount, 7 grams come from saturated fat.
There are also 21 grams of carbohydrate, 12 grams of sugar, 75 milligrams of sodium and 70 milligrams of cholesterol in each serving. On the positive side, Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs also provide 5 grams of protein and 1 gram of fiber. Additionally, they contain 10% of the daily-recommended amount of vitamin A and 6% of the needed calcium and iron.
Ingredients include bourbon vanilla flavor, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, corn starch, cream, dextrose, egg yolk powder, enriched wheat flour skimmed milk, nonfat dry milk, sugar, vanilla extract, vanilla flavor, whole egg and whole milk powder. It also contains beta carboxy methyl cellulose, carotene, carrageenan, locust bean gum, modified corn starch, modified potato starch, mono and diglycerides, sodium alginate, sodium citrate and soya lecithin. The flour is enriched with malted barley flour, folic acid, mononitrate, niacin, palm oil, reduced iron, riboflavin, soybean oil and thiamine.
The tub comes frozen and the eclairs should remain that way until time to serve them. To defrost, just remove the number of eclairs desired and put on a dish. Defrost in the frig for about one hour or at room temperature for roughly one-half hour.
Amazingly, Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs are utterly delicious and the perfect bite size treat for a party. Here is my summary review:
Taste: 5 stars. Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs are just about perfect. They are sweet enough to say “special treat.” However, they aren’t so sweet that you feel like you just ate a mouthful of sugar. They are light, flaky, smooth and creamy. What more could you want in a eclair?
Freshness: 5 stars. As long as Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs are kept sealed in their plastic tub container, in the freezer, until used, they will last quite a while. Once thawed; however, they need to be consumed within a few days.
Variety: 3 stars. As far as I could tell from research, Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs only come with vanilla filling and chocolate coating on top.
Reputation: 5 stars. Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs seem to very popular; therefore, adding to their reputation.
Nutrition: 2 stars. There is no denying the high level of carbohydrates, sugar, fat, and cholesterol in these sweet treats if you choose to eat a serving of five eclairs. Those watching their intake of those items; therefore, might prefer a reduced serving size. I found two was more than enough to make my sweet tooth happy. Another alternative, of course, is to use this treat sparingly and just for very special occasions.
Packaging: 5 stars. Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs come in a white plastic tub that can be reused once the eclairs have been eaten. A brown, gold and green label accents the top of the box. It features the Berkley & Jensen logo print, the name of the product, the number of eclairs inside, etc. While the label isn’t particularly colorful in nature, it is distinctive as is the tub. That means you should easily be able to locate this product in your grocer’s freezer section.
Ease of storage: 4 stars. Truthfully, the storage tub is a little large at 7.5″ by 7.5″ by 4.5″. It does take up some room. While you could remove the eclairs from the tub and store them in freezer wrap, I don’t recommend that option. I suspect it would easily expose them to freezer burn.
Availability: 1 star. We found Berkley & Jensen European Mini Eclairs at B.J.’s. It is unfortunately the only place where I’ve seen them so far. Therefore, it might be difficult locating them locally.
Price: 4 stars. The price for 48 mini eclairs was $7.99. That works out to a little over $.16 per éclair, which isn’t bad. They are worth every penny.
Product purchase probability: 5 stars. My husband loves this mix. We will definitely purchase it again.
Final rating: 3.9 stars. These eclairs are good but don’t have a wide variety or distribution.
