Waiting in line at the DMV can be quite stressful, as you wait patiently for your turn to come around. One way to beat the long lines at the DMV is to make an appointment ahead of time so that you can be seen faster.
Make an Appointment Online
If you want to be seen quickly, make an appointment online by going to the California Department of Motor Vehicles homepage. Under the “Online Services” tab, click on “Make an Appointment” to proceed with making your appointment. There are three options available once you reach the appointment page. You can schedule a driving test (except commercial tests), make an office visit appointment or cancel an existing appointment.
If the purpose of your visit is to take a commercial behind-the-wheel driving test, you will not be able to make an appointment to do so online. Call 1-800-777-0133 during normal business hours to speak to an agent for an appointment for your test.
DMV Location and Purpose of Visit
To better assist you in making your appointment, choose the DMV location that you would like to be seen. Choose from the drop-down menu to find your closest office and then click on the main reason for your visit. Up to three customers can be seen at once at the same appointment.
Finish up by including your name(s), address(es) and phone number(s). Once you submit your personal details, you will be given a confirmation number and you will also have an appointment time. Print off the confirmation page, as this will be required when you go to the DMV.
At the DMV Office
Take your confirmation page with you, along with other supporting documentation you will need to apply for, replace or renew your driving licence, or for some other purpose. With your confirmation page in hand, you will be able to skip ahead to the front of the line and take a number right away to be called when your appointment time comes up, rather than half an hour later.
Scheduling an appointment at the DMV online will help save you a lot of time spent lining up and waiting to be called forward, particularly if you arrive during a busy time. Make sure you take along your confirmation letter with you so that you can be seen at the time of your appointment.
