The Barbara Walters special 2010 doubleheader made history for the TV legend. Of course, the Barbara Walters special 2010 double feature had most of its highlights leaked beforehand. Everyone knew Oprah was going to cry in her special interview, and that she would once again deny she was a lesbian. After that, most viewers already knew the first nine fascinating people of 2010 before the secret winner was unveiled. But in spite of that, the first and second Barbara Walters special proved that the icon is as busy as ever.
Walters has always been a multi-task expert, given all the specials she does and her work on The View. Yet every December she makes time to select the 10 most fascinating people of a given year. But for all the achievements of General David Petraeus, Sarah Palin, Justin Bieber, Kate Middleton and more, one name still hung over all of them last night.
The first special served as the latest step in Oprah Winfrey’s farewell tour. Soon, it will officially be 2011, bringing us that much closer to Oprah’s final episode. As such, it was already time to look ahead to her next chapter in a one-hour interview.
Apparently, the best night available for this interview was on the same date as Walters’ fascinating people show. Therefore, since she was already working on two big shows at once, ABC aired them back-to-back. Although NBC had a bloc of comedy holiday specials and The Apprentice finale, and CBS had their usual Thursday powerhouses, the night was all about Barbara.
The night was still unique for reasons other than the doubleheader, of course. The buzz around the first special was all about Oprah crying, and talking about Gale and Stedman – although they still had a full hour to fill beyond that. Then, in the second show, Walters actually got the Jersey Shore treatment, squared off with Sarah Palin, and honored General Petraeus as the year’s biggest figure.
Although Walters might not be the icon she was in the past, she is clearly far from the end of her career. This may have been her most daunting workload, as she did her usual countdown and said the first of many goodbyes to Oprah. With all of that, the holiday break couldn’t have come at a better time for her.
After the night was finally over, she ended by joking that she would head for a long sleep. But once she wakes up, she will obviously head right back to work for an even busier 2011.
