Barbara Walters’ interview with Oprah is part of a big doubleheader tonight. After the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah, the 10 most fascinating people of 2010 will be disclosed. In both special, details have already been pre-leaked, with several of the most fascinating people already revealed. Yet the winner is still under wraps, whereas the most juicy parts of the night’s first special may not be. Already, the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah has drawn attention for making her cry, and for addressing certain rumors once and for all.
Walters is known for making her subjects cry over the years, and this latest interview was designed to be a sad occasion. Tonight has her final talk with Oprah Winfrey, at least before her show goes off the air. As such, they touched on a lot of areas of Winfrey’s legacy.
But the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah struck a nerve, when she brought up some constantly recurring rumors. Since she and Stedman Graham are still unmarried, and since she and best friend Gayle King are so close, people have speculated on Winfrey’s sexuality for decades.
Yet according to ABC News, Winfrey once more had to deny these rumors, saying that she is “not even kind of a lesbian.” When the remarks were leaked, they were linked together with an emotional part of the interview, when Winfrey broke down while talking about King.
The tears have already hyped up the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah even further, along with the lesbian denials. But Winfrey doesn’t tear up over the rumors, as she breaks down when talking about King as “the mother I never had” and the “friend that everybody deserves.”
When it came time to address the lesbian issue, Winfrey was more annoyed, since it means that someone thinks she’s lying – and that she would want to hide it if it was true. For the last 25 years, Winfrey has opened up everything about her life, including her weight problems and childhood sexual abuse. Therefore, if she was a homosexual, she presumably would have said so by now.
In spite of all the rumors about her, King and Graham, Winfrey still insists that Graham is her true love. Therefore, the other major leak of the Barbara Walters interview with Oprah involved her talking about Graham. She admits that they don’t go out in public together by choice, given all of the stories about them. Yet she insisted that she is still the “love….the lover….the man….the partner….the mate” of her life.
This special is just the beginning for the Winfrey countdown, as the final months of her show are on the horizon. The Barbara Walters interview is bound to prelude a wave of goodbye stories and specials in 2011, so this is the mere calm before the storm.
