Much like Disneyland and Walt Disney World, the international Disney Theme Parks hold holiday and seasonal events. Hong Kong Disneyland is one of the parks that puts on a few seasonal and holiday events, with one event unique to just Hong Kong itself.
If you are thinking about visiting Hong Kong Disneyland in 2011, they are having a year long 5th Anniversary celebration so the events will be bigger than ever this year! Here is a general look at some of the events being held in conjunction with the 5th Anniversary celebration:
1. Chinese New Year – Jan 21 through Feb 13
This event is unique to Hong Kong Disneyland and one certainly worth checking out if your travels allow. In general, this is a very busy time in places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China where Chinese New Year Celebrations are held.
For 2011, it is Year of the Rabbit and Hong Kong Disneyland is hosting a “Year of the Rabbit” celebration taking place from January 21 through February 13. This is the kick-off event for the 5th Anniversary celebration and Hong Kong Disneyland is preparing to start the year off in style.
During the Year of the Rabbit celebration, guests can complete the Lucky Trail where each location represents a different aspect of luck. There will also be a special “5 Fortunes” centerpiece available in 2011 only! Disney characters will be dressed up in their special New Years’ costumes as well.
2. Disney’s Summer Fun June – August 2011
Hong Kong gets terribly warm during the summer months so this is a great way to come cool off and enjoy Disneyland for a day. Last year, the theme was centered around Stitch and the event featured lots of “cool” activities. Kids could learn to hula hoop with Minnie Mouse, there were cooling stations set up, special parades (with water works), and more. Specific event dates have not been announced yet, but the event will take start sometime in June and run through August.
3. Haunted Halloween -September – October 2011
This event is one of my personal favorites. For those who have attended Halloween events at Knott’s Scary Farm and Universal Studios, you will enjoy the special themed mazes and Halloween activities at Hong Kong Disneyland. This is the only Disney Park where I’ve experienced actual haunted mazes before. While they might not be in the league with Universal for scare levels, these will still get the heart racing!
Last year’s theme featured Maleficent and the year before included Jack Skellington. No details yet on what this year’s theme will be, but you can guarantee lots of ghoulish fun!
4. Sparkling Christmas – November 2011 – January 2012
Christmastime is also another wonderful time to visit Hong Kong Disneyland. The temperatures are dropping, but it is usually nice and warm during the day. The decorations are festive, there are special menus, merchandise, and of course Christmas parades. It is a beautiful time to visit Hong Kong in general as the harbor has special holiday lights during the laser show and many malls and shopping areas have festive decorations.
During the 2010 Sparkling Christmas event, Hong Kong Disneyland introduced Duffy the Disney Bear who also made his debut at Walt Disney World and Disney California Adventure in October. Duffy is quite popular at Tokyo DisneySEA and now he also calls Hong Kong Disneyland home as well.
If you are unable to visit Hong Kong Disneyland during one of these specified events, there are still special 5th Anniversary celebration elements taking place in 2011. Tinkerbell will be part of a new meet & greet, there will be a new parade, and Tinkerbell will also light up the castle each night during the year long celebration.
