Animals that live in the Yukon are built tough. Animals like caribou, grizzly bear, musk ox, wolves, moose, mountain sheep and goat, black bears, and wood bison. It can get extremely cold in the Yukon in winter and that can be hard on the animals.
One animal that lives there are the caribou also known as reindeer. Caribou are large deer type animals that are make to live in the cold weather climates that have snow most of the year. Females weigh between 170 to 260 pounds and males between 200 to 460 pound but some have reached as much as 700 pounds. They have antlers that shed every year. There antlers have shovels that they use to scoop snow in winter to get food. They have four chambered stomachs, and eat lichens, leaves of willows, birches, and sedges and grasses. They have also eaten lemmings, arctic char, and bird eggs. Caribous are eaten by animals like wolves and bears. Caribou have been divided into two main groups, tundra and woodland caribou. There are six subgroups of tundra that are Peary, Svalbard, Markus, mountain/wild, porcupine or grants and barren ground caribou. Woodland caribou have three sub groups Finnish forest, migratory woodland, and queen charlotle islands caribou.
Another animal that lives in the Yukon is the grizzly bear. Grizzly bears are the second largest bear on the planet reaching weights of up to 1000 pounds. They eat large animals like moose and elk, fish, and plants like berries. A mother grizzly is a very dangerous animal, attacking anything that might be a threat to her cubs.
One of the largest if not the largest animal to live in the Yukon is the wood bison. Male wood bison can weigh more than 2000 pounds. The wood bison is endangered species with only 3000 left in the wild. They eat different types of grasses and shrubs.
Another large animal there is the musk ox. Musk ox are make for living in the cold claimants and only live in the arctic they are large hove animals like the bison. They weigh between 397 to 882 pounds with specimens in zoos reaching 1430 pounds because of over feeding. They eat grasses and shrubs they can find.
One of the tallest animals in the Yukon is the moose. Moose are large deer like animals that reach sex feel at the shoulder. They have antlers that look like shovels. They eat tree leaves, grasses, and other vegetation. They weigh between 600 to 800 pounds. The largest type of moose is the Alaskan moose which stand seven feet at shoulder and males weigh 1396 pounds.
