I love Amish Farmers Markets. For me they are part county fairs, selling snow cones, funnel cakes and ice cream cones. Part old time butcher shops where one can find fresh chicken backs, pig feet and beef bones not readily available into today’s modern supermarkets. Part bake shop featuring homemade donuts, raisin bread, sticky buns and shoe fly pie. Part craft show where one can purchase handmade quilts, mail boxes and wooden toys.
When I am hungry I look no further then the soft pretzel stand, where young Amish girls are busily selling fresh from the oven soft hot pretzels, brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with coarse salt. For a real treat I order a hot dog and cheese wrapped inside the soft pretzel dough and eat it with the hot honey mustard sold on the side.
I am fortunate that I live close to several Amish Country Markets and one of my favorites is the Amish Country Farmers Market, 101 Marlboro Ave , Easton , MD. Hours Thursday 9-6, Fridays 9-7 and Saturday 9 – 3. www.AmishCountryMarket.com
The market got its start in the 1980’s at the intersection of RT 301 and RT 50 in Queenstown and moved to Annapolis after the building they were in changed hands. Amish market founder Dan Esh expanded his Amish Markets opening up locations in Pennsylvania , Delaware , Maryland and New Jersey . In 2007 a location became available and Esh returned to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and opened up the Amish Country Market in Easton .
Today the market is a bustling place filled with both Amish and English (the term used by the Amish for their non-Amish neighbors) stands. Food stands dominate as they should in any Amish market. Here they include; Country Cheese and Salads, Esh Meats, Fisher Pastries, Fudge ‘N Fun, Olde Thyme Candy Shoppe, Ruthie’s Soft Pretzels, Raymond’s Smokehouse, Soup & Salad Corner, Stoltzfus BBQ, The Little Bulk
Store and Wings Landing Produce.
Other stands include a health food stand; Nature’s Nutrients, Georgetown Wood Craft featuring Amish made wooden toys and puzzles, Lanco Handmade Furniture featuring Amish and Mennonite High Quality Handcrafted Hardwood Furniture www.lancohandmadefurniture.com along with antique, collectable and other craft booths.
Friday Nights are ‘Social Nights’ at the market featuring ‘All You Can Eat Dinner’ at
Raymond’s Smokehouse. The Amish Country Market also hold pig roasts on Friday nights throughout the year. Check their web site for dates and times.
