In a season full of tragic personal stories, American Idol’s Chris Medina is the clear winner on the hardship front. Medina’s girlfriend, Juliana Ramos, was partially paralyzed in a car accident shortly before the couple was supposed to marry. Medina has remained faithful to his fiancé, and hopes that success as a musician will solve many of their problems. American Idol fans, it seems, are not going to wait until Medina succeeds as a musician; they are already voting with their wallets.
Juliana Ramos’ mother recently wrote on Facebook about how difficult it is for Juliana (Chris Medina’s girlfriend) to see post-accident footage of herself on American idol and elsewhere on television (she was also featured on Oprah’s show). Apparently, the footage is also difficult for many American idol fans to watch, and that difficulty has some of them reaching for their wallets.
TMZ reports that Chris Medina has received donations of $27,000 from American Idol fans since he discussed the financial crisis he and his fiancée, Juliana Ramos, face since her car accident. This anonymous giving by American Idol fans is a true feel-good story, and it is not particularly surprising. Over and over, we find that the American public is both forgiving and charitable. While $27,000 might not seem like a huge gift, remember that no one asked these people to donate. And, over the course of the Idol season, I am certain that the number will grow.
Chris Medina may or may not win American Idol. Like all of the contestants, he would have to be considered a long-shot at present. But appearing on the show has already been worth his while. Thanks to generous Idol fans, he is getting some real help for girlfriend Juliana Ramos.
