Wednesday night on “American Idol,” the Top 13 contestants performed songs by their own idols.
But, on a week that should have been so easy, the results were mixed. Here’s a look at the Top 13 performances:
Casey Abrams – He sang the Joe Cocker version of “With A Little Help From My Friends” and judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler ate it up. Steven Tyler gave him a colorful review, calling him “a rainbow of talent.”
Paul McDonald – He sang “Come Pick Me Up” by Ryan Adams. J-Lo had no idea who Ryan Adam is. Meanwhile Randy rattled off Adams songs and the names of other artists who are in McDonald’s genre. Steven Tyler loves McDonald’s raspy voice. Randy just loves him on this show, period.
Pia Toscano – Her powerful rendition of “All By Myself” had Randy comparing her to the “Big Three” female singers: Celine, Mariah and Whitney. That’s some big shoes to fill!
James Durbin – He sang McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” and Randy Jackson was amazed. He loved how Durbin tuned his style around this week.
Jacob Lusk – His version of “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly had the judges gushing over how good he is.
Scott McCreery – He performed a Garth Brooks’ “The River,” fully solidifying his country crooner status.
Haley Reinhart – Steven Tyler liked her version of Lee Ann Rimes’ ” Blue” but the song seemed to make Randy blue. He called it “boring” and “a little sleepy.”
Thia Megia – The judges liked the beginning of her version of “Smile” better than the end and it put a real damper on her critique. She took the criticism hard.
Karen Rodriguez – She sang a song by her inspiration, Selena. But pitch problems prevailed and the judges were a bit disappointed.
Lauren Alaina – Her version of Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” wasn’t kick a- – enough for the judges.
Ashthon Jones – All diva’d out, she sang Diana Ross’s “When You Tell Me That You Love Me.” While she looked elegant and the judges kinda liked it, Randy called it a safe move and they all seem to think she has more in her than this.
Stefano Langone – He sang “Lately” by Stevie Wonder and Randy said it started off rocky but in the end he sleighed it.
Naima Adedapo – Her song was “Umbrella” by Rihanna and she put some reggae into it. Her pitchiness was canceled out by her funky dance moves.
With the performances logged, who will go home this week on “American Idol?”
