“Make way for the bad guy,” said Al Pacino as Tony Montana in “Scarface.” Little did he know that one day the government may be saying the same of him. Reports have leaked that actor Al Pacino owes $169,000 for 2008 and $19,000 in 2009, equaling over $188,000. The long list of Pacino movies has grossed over $1 billion, yet that doesn’t make him exempt from an Internal Revenue Service tax lien. According to Pacino’s camp, the mix up was the fault of former business manager Kenneth Starr. Starr was recently sentenced to seven years in prison due to fraudulent dealings with other Hollywood stars.
Al Pacino isn’t the only celebrity who owes the IRS money. Paul Hogan, Chris Tucker and Nicolas Cage are some of the biggest offenders from 2010.
The “Drive Angry 3D” star is no stranger to back taxes. Nicolas Cage owed a whopping $14 million for 2009. After paying that off, the IRS told Cage he owed another $3.8 million in delinquent taxes. Some of that debt is due to unpaid taxes on a Rhode Island mansion. Cage is also claiming that his former business manager, Samuel J. Levin, is to blame. Seems like celebrities love to blame others.
Chris Tucker can’t seem to get himself out of hot water. The actor reportedly owed over $3 million in taxes in 2009, which when added to the 2010 debt brings Tucker to $11.5 million. With the $25 million per movie paychecks that Tucker receives, its hard to believe the actor is short of funds.
“Crocodile Dundee” star Paul Hogan takes the cake, beating out his celebrity cohorts for most owed taxes. The Australian native returned home in August of 2010 for his mother’s funeral and was issued a Departure Prohibition Order by the Australian government until a tax debt of AU $37.5 million from undeclared income is settled. That would equal approximately $150 million USD. Hogan has been accused of partaking in a tax fraud scheme for the last five years through the use of an offshore account.
Al Pacino claims his finances are under new management that will take care of his tax situation quickly. No matter who you are, the IRS will make sure you pay your taxes.
