The AFC championship game 2011 is being formed from bitter rivalries. Already, the AFC championship game 2011 has a Steelers team that survived a tough test against their arch rivals. Today, the Patriots and Jets will renew their heated feud, after an endless week of talking about it. This conference has dominated the hype this week, with two sets of arch rivals colliding. Therefore, the matchup for the AFC championship game 2011 might seem less gripping by comparison – although it will feature some kind of rematch.
The Steelers got by their mortal enemies in Baltimore, but their Super Bowl run is only halfway over. They are likely banged up after facing the Ravens, as per usual. However, they must recover against a team that beat them in the regular season.
If the Patriots win, the AFC championship game 2011 will be held between them and the Steelers in New England. Both the Patriots and Steelers aren’t arch rivals, like they are with the Jets and Ravens. Yet they have history, as New England manhandled Pittsburgh on the road in the 2005 title match, and did it again two months ago.
The Patriots would be relieved to shut the Jets up today, as they make the Steelers relatively quiet by comparison. Given how they destroyed Pittsburgh weeks ago, and how they played ugly football in the first half, New England would like their chances if they played next week.
Yet there’s a chance that the AFC championship game 2011 would be held in Pittsburgh instead. If the Jets shock the world, their reward would be another visit to Heinz Field, where they also beat the Steelers this season. They did so four weeks ago, which helped them recover from their humiliating losses to the Patriots and Dolphins.
At the least, the Steelers came a lot closer to beating the Jets than they did the Patriots. Yet they were stopped at the goal line on the final play, against a New York team that was reeling beforehand. If they faced the Jets again, they would carry much larger momentum into Pittsburgh this time.
Either way, the AFC championship game 2011 would be a rematch, albeit not between bitter rivals. However, a Patriots-Steelers or a Jets-Steelers battle stands to carry a lot of hype, and much bigger stakes.
No matter what, Pittsburgh will have a chance to quell some regular season demons. They would face either a Patriots team hungry for a fourth ring, or a Jets squad trying to avenge last year’s title game defeat. This conference has featured the most intrigue in the postseason, and it may stay that way to the end.
However, if the Bears and Packers meet in the NFC next week, the AFC championship game would have some competition. But with the Steelers already there, and the Patriots or Jets set to join them, it could be a close call.
