Lehigh Acres Florida is a quiet little town just east of Fort Myers. Fort Myers, Sanibel Island and Captiva have more romantic images but Lehigh Acres is a little bit country and laid back. In fact it was carved out of what was previously Florida cattle ranch land.
Since I moved down here from Atlanta I have found a great place to spend a few hours each week. It is a hidden place but it has a lot going for it. It is the Lehigh Acres Flea Market. You really need to look for it but once you find it you will return again and again. I remember riding my bike around Lehigh Acres and discovering the Lehigh Acres Flea Market hidden behind the Senior Citizen Community Center.
I was originally drawn to Oscar’s. Oscar is known as “the tomato Man.” He makes the trip to the farmer’s market about 30 miles south to bring back tomatoes and other fresh vegetables. He also has quite a collection of unusual items you might not find anywhere else. Everything from old records to Jeff Gordon NASCAR collectibles. I went back a couple of times a week to pick up peaches, mangos, star fruit and the occasional collectible.
Next door to Oscar’s is a real “flea market” shop named for the owner “Chris”. This is the type of shop you need to visit at least once a week because Chris is constantly searching southwest Florida for new inventory. I have found everything from antique chests of drawers to an anchor for my canoe. I can spend hours in there just looking around.
If I get tired of walking around I can have a seat at Las Boricuas restaurant with a free cup of coffee. Las Boricuas is run by two ladies from Puerto Rico and the food is just like I would get on the island of enchantment. Usually there are several of the shop owners sitting around drinking coffee and discussing the events of the day.
Over the past few months the Lehigh Acres Flea Market has sprouted more and more shops. You can find used appliances, get furniture re-upholstered, have a sound system installed in your car or get it detailed. There is a lady that does alterations to clothes that was recently written up in the local newspaper.
There seems to be some fun celebration going on many Saturdays at the Lehigh Acres Flea Market. Talent shows, health fairs and a vintage car show have been held recently. There is even a guy that carves palm trees into all kinds of fun statues with a chain saw. So if you are in the Fort Myers Florida area you might want to take in the Lehigh Acres Flea Market. It is located at the intersection of Homestead Blvd. and Beth Stacey Road. It is across the street from the Publix grocery store behind the Lee County Sheriff’s substation. Have fun!
