I have recently discovered a local eatery that blends bread bakery delights with authentic Italian cuisine. Labriola Bakery is smartly tucked into an upscale suburban strip mall in Oakbrook, Illinois, just 30 minutes from the city of Chicago. I find Labriola’s location to be ideal as it is efficiently situated smack dab between two major area shopping malls. In fact, my girlfriends and I feel it makes for a perfect post shopping spree lunch spot. And dining at Labriola for my group of gal pals is almost like stepping into a Venetian cafe.
Established in 1993, Labriola offers artisan breads, hot and cold sandwiches, homemade soups, pastas, pizza and pastries. Their refreshing salad options include: chopped, Caesar, orchard and the exquisite Labriola grilled bread mixture. At first, I thought a grilled bread salad sounded somewhat strange, but once I sunk my teeth into the vinaigrette drizzled Ciabatta, I was hooked! Salads at Labriola are priced at around $7.00 each and include a crunchy sampling of their famed artisan bread. You can also add chicken to any tossed salad for just an additional $1.99.
Labriola’s menu features an assortment of cold sandwich choices like: Rosemary ham and Swiss, oven roasted turkey and roast beef, to name just a few. Sandwich options are highlighted by the bakeries signature bread collections such as: Italian, harvest multi-grain, sesame semolina and more. Cold sandwiches cost around $8.00 and include your choice or homemade chips or a side salad.
The cafe’s menu also advertises mouth watering hot sandwiches like: a Black Angus burger resting on a pretzel bun, a foot long grilled cheese, a grilled honey barbecue chicken sandwich and a French dip. My favorite: the meatball sub on an artisan baguette smothered with marinara and crowned with bubbly cheese. Hot sandwiches are priced at $6.99 to $9.99.
Labriola is also well known for its Neapolitan pizza specialties cooked to perfection in a wood fired oven. Options are priced at under $13.00 each and feature fantastically unique ingredients including: tomatoes, apple wood smoked bacon, spinach, California goat cheese, sweet fennel sausage, shaved red onions and coriander. Mouth watering pasta entrees like ricotta gnocchi, stuffed tortellini and baked rigatoni with sausage and peppers are conveniently served in half or full portions.
Labriola is located in the Oakbrook Promenade mall at 3021 Butterfield Road. The eatery is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and provides catering services as well.
