Would you believe there could be more sweetness on the way for you good folks that enjoy you some tasty operating system to go with your smartphone or tablet pc? First off, we have to wonder what led these companies promoting operating systems after cakes, pies, or frozen yogurt to go down the enticing tasty sweet genre for a naming convention. Ah, the secrets of great companies. Anyway, the infamous leaks that always seem to spring up out of nowhere (hmm, wonder why that is!) have spurted out another gem. The new hot rumor is that a Honeycomb Operating System (OS) maybe on the way!
Surely, we could have done better with Boston Crème Pie, but it appears that Honeycomb will have to do. Yes, the makers of the Android OS are busily putting together another iteration to release on to the huddled masses that are always in search of the next big thing. So what sweet things can we expect from this next generation of the Android operating system? Well the hot rumors likely end with the name because the good folks with Android are being very tight lipped about what is coming next.
Many in the industry believe that they will be sticking to form and releasing this as something like a 3.1 or 3.2 addition of the software. This has been the modus operandi of the company to this point and there is little reason to believe that they will change up now. For those that have received the recent 2.2 upgrade to their device, they know that there are some things that could be cleaned up and rough spots that need to be worked out and thus many believe that Honeycomb will be a cleanup session more than a completely new, earth shattering full, new operating system. So think enhancement, not re-invention!
Another rumor making the rounds is that this new upgrade maybe primarily for those tablets that are currently running some iteration of the Android operating system. Many believe that the tablet might be the future of the industry so it is not a surprise that the company might approach it from this angle, but surely those of you carrying an Android smartphone might be a bit disappointed that you will not get to share in the fun.
The interesting question will be when to expect this latest version to make its appearance. If you don’t think this is something to watch out for, consider this fact. Android has been pretty regular and fairly quick in spitting out these “upgrades” if you will. With all the excitement being generated by Froyo and when it was going to be released, the company was getting ready to generate a press release on its new Gingerbread version. Well now being told that we can expect to see Gingerbread late fall (November), the intrigue becomes when Honeycomb will follow.
It would seemingly be a huge gamble for a company to think that they could simultaneously release to upgrades seemingly right on top of one another. Historically though, these groups have liked to release their newest versions around the holiday season in hopes of capturing a lion’s share of the consumer’s Christmas dollar. However, it would remain to be seen if this kind of strategy would help Android to take control of the market, or more likely dilute themselves and perhaps shrink some of their profits.
On the other hand, you can also see that Tablet PC’s are now making their mark on the scene and will certainly begin to cut into the market currently held by other devices such as iPads or Netbooks. You will begin to see things change to more people steering towards these devices, and many will look to systems with Android on them because of their quality. It will definitely be an interesting dynamic to watch, but smart money would be for Android to build up some momentum for it and release it later in 1st quarter 2011!
