It’s been more than two years but I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the month of March; the air was cool and crisp. I could see the twinkle of every luminescent star in the dark velvet blue sky. He asked me to walk with him to our favorite place. We walked holding hands. Our faces tucked deep within our sweater hoods. Small, cold flakes of snow fell onto our sleeves like fairy dust. As we walked the winding trail, the park opened into a beautiful river. Large chunks of sparkling ice floated slowly toward the river’s edge. The moon shone a beautiful spotlight, perfectly showcasing every snowflake’s final dance atop an icy river. As I turned to face him, he met my gaze with a tender smile. In his left hand he held a ring.
He lowered himself down on one knee and tucked a ring box into his right pocket. He removed his hood to reveal that beautiful, wavy, black hair that I adored. When he looked at me with those dark brown eyes, my heart fluttered as if it was mounted on butterfly wings. With a smile that was as peaceful as a beach sunset, he said it, ” Would you be mine until?” Yes, without hesitation, I answered yes! The ring was perfect! A white gold band wrapped in crystal clear diamonds with a single, brilliant princess cut diamond set in the center! The ring twinkled like angel tears. Inside the band was the inscription, “A & J Until.” ‘˜Until’ is the title of a song that became our motto. We would love each other until there was no time. That night was so cold, but it felt warmer than the first day of spring. As we walked back to the car, all I could think of was my life with the man of my dreams!
One year later I stood at the edge of an ocean, before a peaceful orange-red sunset. The sun seemed as big as the sky as it dipped into the sea. The waves took on a dark blue hue as they rose and fell, gently rushing in on my toes. The sand beneath my feet was white and soft. The scent of hydrangeas and wildflowers rode high on the ocean breeze. I paused in an attempt to capture this moment in time. Then I saw his face.
There he stood wearing a cream linen pant and shirt, which fell perfectly over his toned body. By his choice, he topped it off with a pair of tan Timberland boots! But he looked absolutely divine. We stood there, just the two of us and vowed to love each other “Until.” There was no fancy dress, no elaborate reception, no seating chart, or menu choices. It was he and I, on a beach in Maui, in love! One man filled my heart with a love I’ve never felt. One perfect evening made that love forever.
