Over the last years, the entire gaming world seems to have gone crazy for motion controlled gaming, but although motion gaming reigns supreme in the gaming world, it’s not the first fad to pass through the gaming world. Following are 5 gaming trends that swept the gaming world before motion gaming.
Before the Nintendo Game Boy, entire families had to crowd around their televisions to play what were called “Home Entertainment Systems”, but the Game Boy changed that completely and gave birth to a new gaming platform – portable “handheld” gaming. After the Game Boy launched there were countless other handheld gaming devices to grace the gaming world and Nintendo continues to further innovation in the handheld gaming world with its latest installment the Nintendo 3DS.
It might not seem this way, but video games weren’t always the 3D computer generated masterpieces that they are nowadays. Back in my time, 8-bit gaming graphics reigned supreme, but once the first 3D graphic games hit the market, the gaming world was plagued with horrible 3D-like polygon gaming characters until game developers finally mastered “mapping” and consoles were powerful enough to deliver the gaming graphics that we enjoy today.
The Sega Dreamcast is one of the greatest wonders of the gaming world [it was a great console that failed horribly], but during the Dreamcast’s short time on the market, it brought worldwide appeal to online gaming. The Xbox and PlayStation 2 furthered the Dreamcast’s efforts to make online gaming the new “gaming thing” and once online gaming hit, it spread like wildfire – games were able to be marketed and sold solely on the fact that they supported online gaming.
Yep, something as simple as gaming discs was a gaming trend that changed the face of gaming forever. Before discs gamers were forced to play their favorite games via gaming cartridges – that seemed to collect way too much dust and requires continuous blowing. Gaming discs opened up the gaming world to better graphics, multiple media playback formats, and eventually gave rise to the type of graphics and media playback innovations like Blu-ray discs.
Unnecessary Gaming Peripherals
Before game developers and companies got things right with motioned gaming, they screwed things up as much and as often as possible by implementing just about every silly accessory or gaming peripheral device imaginable – remember the Virtual Boy? Over the years gaming has been the victim of countless gaming guns, gloves, steering wheels, wacky controllers, memory storage units, and other undesirable gaming units – and luckily most of them haven’t survived the test of time.
