American Idol contestant Lauren Alaina has been tabbed as a favorite by several media outlets entering the Final 24. I actually thought she was the most impressive performer during individual auditions. So it’s not surprise to me or many other people that Alaina is now resting comfortably in the American Idol final 13.
Who is Lauren Alaina? She’s just the country/pop singer from Rossville, Georgia who rocked a little Reba McEntire on her way to the Final 13. She’s the girl next door and a cross between Trisha Yearwood and Kelly Clarkson. Lauren Alaina is about to probably blow the competition away. But which songs will she choose on her way to the overall 2011 American Idol title? Here are five songs I think would benefit Lauren Alaina if she is provided the opportunity to have her choice.
1) American Girl/Trisha Yearwood
Why not go with the idea that Lauren Alaina reminds the judges and fans of a young Trisha Yearwood. Yearwood, who is now married to country singer Garth Brooks, had incredible success with the song called “American Girl.” It kind of sums up the All-American reaction Alaina is already receiving from the judges and fans. So why not just go with it? Sure, “American Girl” isn’t one of the most difficult songs that is going to show off huge vocal range–but it’s fun, nearly pop and a song Alaina might actually be able to do better than Yearwood.
2) If I Die Young/The Band Perry
This country song of the year is still fresh enough and on the minds of fans across the country after The Band Perry rocked it. I think Lauren Alaina could absolutely tear it up and bring the audience to a standing ovation with this young country classic. It’s an emotional song that could be tweaked a bit, too to further impress the judges.
3) Landslide/Stevie Nicks
I know many people have attempted the Stevie Nicks classic before, but I believe Lauren Alaina could bring out some real emotion with her powerful vocals and honesty. Alaina is the type of singer who could probably slam a slow or fast song. She is in my opinion the most professional sounding performer in the contest standing. Alaina would probably make Stevie Nicks proud with her own rendition of this terrific song.
4) For The Girls/Martina McBride
Others have tried this song and failed miserably. Lauren Alaina could pull off a Martina McBride song if anyone can. This girl anthem is a rocking song much like the Reba “Turn On Your Radio” tune she performed in the Final 24 of American Idol. It’s well known and cross over enough that fans at home can sing along with it.
I think this would be an absolute show stopper if Alaina is presented with the opportunity to sing it.
5) Crazy/Patsy Cline
Call me “Crazy” but I think Lauren Alaina has the nerve and vocal ability to pull of a song that is normally regarded as untouchable. Can you imagine the reaction from the audience and judges if she somehow managed to hit the notes in such a classic country song? I think Lauren Alaina could add a little pep to it and give it a “younger” feel, too.
These are five songs I believe would score huge points with the judges and fans if Lauren Alaina is provided the opportunity to sing these on American Idol. I particularly think The Band Perry song “If I Die Young” is completely relevant(to steal a Simon term) and would push her even further to the top of the pile of performers(if she isn’t already). I also think Alaina could pull off “Firework” or a multitude of other Katy Perry or even Kelly Clarkson hits.
Much like Scotty McCreery, I think Lauren Alaina has the opportunity to sign a big time recording contract regardless of whether she wins American Idol or not. This may be the year for country on American Idol-and Alaina and McCreery might just prove it.
