Philippians 3:8 – 21 is one of the most encouraging verses in the Bible, especially in terms of pressing towards an objective. The year 2011 presents opportunities to redeem ourselves and work towards making our lives better in Christ Jesus. Paul shares with the church in Philippians about his pursuit for perfection in Christ Jesus, and from his letter, 5 points emerge that apply to all Christians worldwide.
Paul’s pursuit for his goal is based on 5 biblical points;
1. Counting all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus
Many are the times, when we tend to live in the glory of past events. This tendency to live in the past always blocks blessing coming your way, and furthermore, it blocks you from realizing and grasping the opportunities that are ahead of you, hence you end up fading in the past. Counting all things a loss, does not necessarily mean they are not significant, but should be a stepping stone to greater heights. God says, He will lift His people from glory to glory, and we must let go of the past glories and be ready to clinch on new ones ahead in 2011.
2. Putting aside his own righteousness, which originates from the law, and obtaining the righteousness of Christ through faith
Evidently, Man is perceived to righteous in his own mind, and it takes a real man to acknowledge his shortcomings and be ready to be led. Stubbornness has always been the biggest obstacle in pursuit for greater heights. Deuteronomy 29:18-19 says, “so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood; and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates[a] of my heart’-as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.”
Our own stubbornness blocks us from seeing the righteousness of God. In 2011, if we open our eyes, and look beyond our ‘all knowing attitude’ then we can see and obtain the righteousness of Christ Jesus.
3. Acknowledging that perfection cannot be obtained here on earth, and requires pressing on
No man on earth is perfect except Jesus Christ when He was on earth. Therefore it is only prudent to acknowledge our strengths and weaknesses and work towards complimenting each other in the year 2011. If a mistake is made, the wise step to make is to correct the wrong with love and kindliness. After all, a righteous man falls seven times, and seven times he shall rise again. Keep pressing towards your objectives through the New Year, and never quit.
4. Pursuing that which Christ Jesus has already laid hold of him
Everything on earth is designed to glorify God. Every talent and gift from God is to be used to glorify Him. It does not benefit a man to use his God given gifts and talents to immerse property or fame to himself. What does it benefit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? Absolutely nothing. Therefore the most prudent thing is to pursue that which Christ Jesus is holding for us, for the glory of His name.
5. Forgetting that which is behind and striving ahead
Forget the past failures and frustrations. As earlier stated, a righteous man will fall seven times and will rise again. Never let your past hold you back. Quitters never win, and likewise, winners never quit. Don’t live in your past glories either. Yes they are important and they define you, but the most important thing to do is to get over them and look ahead to what the future holds for you. The year 2011 has great promises of God to you. All you need to do is claim them.
