It’s not a heavily guarded secret that men hate chick flicks. Men prefer any other movie to the romantic comedy. Horror, science fiction, black comedy. Anything but romantic comedies. When I owned a video store, I would see guys literally dragged into the romantic comedy section. While their girlfriends tried to decide between the new Meg Ryan and the new Sandra Bullock film, the man just stood there. His manhood in a vice. His eyes staring blankly at the new Bruce Willis action movie. Men are powerless when it comes to choosing what movies they’re going to watch. The video store truly was the woman’s choice. Although we’re in an age of Netflix and Redbox, men are still faced with the same grueling situation. But if you’re serious about picking out a chick flick that you and your boyfriend can enjoy, these are 5 titles that male customers raved about, despite being chick flicks.
Men love big things. And everything about this movie is big. Big stars. Big boats. And big catastrophe. Everything about this movie was done on a grandiose scale. And while the girlfriend will drool over Leonardo DiCaprio, the men will keep an eye on the beautiful Kate Winslet. Also, the wild sea keeps reminding the male viewer that disaster is imminent. During the final scenes, women are caught up in the love story. But men are enthralled to watch the destruction of the huge cruise ship.
2. Mean Girls
In the years since its release, Mean Girls has become a cult classic. Women will love this movie for its truthful nature. They know how mean and cruel high school girls can be. It speaks to them. For men, the actresses are visually appealing. But beyond the exterior, the movie is full of laughs. The humor knows no sexuality and really transcends both males and females. Also note that in the last couple years Tina Fey, who served as the writer and a star of the film, has become a sort of sex symbol for men.
3. Never Been Kissed
This forgotten film from 1999 remains one of the more bearable chick flicks in recent past. Whether its because of the adorable Drew Barrymore, or the underlining baseball storyline, this movie never dulls. It keeps the right ratio of comedy to romance. Although the movie takes a small dive towards the end, the sappiness doesn’t kill the mood. Also, David Arquette as the dimwitted hapless brother probably appeals to them more than you would like to acknowledge.
4. Legally Blonde
Another romantic comedy starring a beautiful blonde. What are the chances? Legally Blonde stars the living Barbie Doll Reese Witherspoon, as a bumbling blonde who follows her boyfriend to law school to win him back. The premise is a bit far fetched, but Witherspoon makes it work. Her charming good looks will keep your mans attention for the whole 90 minute film. Also, there are a lot of solid one liners. Your gentleman might get a little annoyed since the movie does paint most men as fools and chauvinistic. But for the most part, its a light comedy peppered with a little sweet romance.
5. 50 First Dates
Again starring the lovable Drew Barrymore and ever better, the awesome Adam Sandler. Adam Sandler is every mans dream in a completely non-sexual way. He is what every man wants to be. Tall, funny, rich and making out with Drew Barrymore. If you don’t mind your man fantasizing about Adam Sandler the whole time, then this is a definite choice for movie night. The story is dorky, which appeals to the males, but it is also sweet. And best of all, the movie comes with a happy ending.
These movies were 5 of the more acceptable chick flicks. If you two cannot decide on a film to get one night, consider choosing one of these films. They’re guaranteed to please both of you.
