Vehicles have all kinds of problems throughout the years. Some of these problems can be pretty severe and costly. However, other vehicle issues are simple to fix and can be done by just about anyone. Plenty of people send their vehicles off to the auto mechanic at the first sign of trouble, but it is easily possible to do some car repairs yourself. Obviously, you won’t be tinkering with the engine, but smaller things can be handled on your own. Take a look at these four vehicle repairs that you can do yourself.
Obviously, many people know that you can change your own vehicle oil. It’s a necessary task that must be carried out every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. To be on the safe side, you should change your oil every 3,000 miles. This job can easily be carried out in an hour or less on any day that you have the time. Anyways, let’s talk about actually changing the oil.
Doing an oil change is pretty simple. The following tools are all you will need to do it:
* New Oil Filter
* Four to Five Quarts of Oil
* Rags for Cleanup
* Oil Pan (to collect the runoff of oil)
* Tool to Remove the Old Oil Filter
Right now, we’re going to look at the quick version of an oil change. You need to remove the oil filter, drain the oil into a container, put the new filter on, and put new oil into the vehicle. Some vehicles take four quarts while others may take up to five. From there, you just clean up and get rid of the old oil. It is completely illegal to just throw away used motor oil, so you’ll need to drop it off at a center that accepts motor oil. Luckily, plenty of repair garages will accept the oil for free. It’s as simple as that. You can save yourself around $10.00 by changing your own oil.
The spark plugs are what fire up the car when you turn the key in the ignition – obviously. So then, how do you replace them? They are fairly easy to replace, but you need to know a few things before you start. Here’s what you need to change your spark plugs:
* Calibration Tool (looks like a coin)
* Calibration Numbers for Your Vehicle’s Spark Plugs
* New Spark Plugs (number depends upon how many cylinders your vehicle has)
Anyways, changing the spark plugs is simple. You just remove the old spark plugs. Afterward, you calibrate the new spark plugs with the coin-like tool and then stick them into the vehicle where they go. It’s all a pretty simple process, but you need to make the calibration precise or you could cause some problems in your vehicle. Luckily, changing your own spark plugs can save you a good amount of money, but it varies from vehicle-to-vehicle. It should only take you an hour or so to take care of a spark plugs changing.
Some people will never run into the rear-view mirror problem. However, some people will be driving along one day, and their rear-view mirror will just fall into their lap. You don’t need to send your car to the mechanic to get this problem fixed because it is so simple and cheap to do yourself. So then, you’ll need the following tools:
* Epoxy (what binds the rear-view mirror button to the glass)
* Screwdriver (to remove the button from the mirror)
* Rubbing Alcohol (to clean the button)
* Plastic Scraper (to remove residue from windshield)
All you need to do is sandpaper all residue from the button, which is the piece that attaches the mirror to the windshield. From there, clean the button with rubbing alcohol. Next, you’ll need to scrape off all the residue that remains on the windshield. Use the two-part epoxy on the windshield and button to bind them together. Also, you can tape the button to the windshield too for extra safety. Wait a few hours and then slide the mirror back onto the button and screw it back on if required. Fortunately, this entire process is quick and simple. This whole thing should cost you less than $10.00.
Side-view mirrors will take more to fix than the previously mentioned things on our list. However, it still isn’t that difficult to take care of. Anyways, you’ll need the following things to take care of this job:
* New Side Mirror
You’ll simply take apart the door panel on the side of the car where the mirror needs to be replaced. Luckily, this usually only involves a screwdriver and some prying, which won’t damage the vehicle in any way. From there, you’ll remove the side mirror and add on the replacement. You can get a replacement side mirror for less than $30.00 at your local junk yard. You will only run into a problem if you can’t find your vehicle’s make, color, and model at the place. Next, just replace the side-mirror with the new one and put everything back together. The job is done then, and you have probably saved yourself a couple hundred dollars.
As you can see, there are plenty of vehicle repairs that you can do yourself to save a good deal of money. You could save a couple hundred dollars every year if you do these repairs on your own. None of them involve tinkering with intricate parts of the vehicle, so you don’t have to worry too much about wrecking the vehicle. Still, you need to be extremely careful when working on your vehicle to avoid breaking anything while you are trying to do something else.
