H.R. 589 – the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Expansion Act of 2011 to date has a total of 67 co-sponsors that have signed up to support this bill. The current score is 67 Democrats and 0 Republicans. What is it about stepping up to assist millions of American citizens that have lost their job by no fault of their own that troubles the Republicans so? Zero? Not one single Republican can break ranks from the Republican Party Line to support this desperately needed legislation? This seems like a conspiracy, it smells like collusion.
I will give the Republicans this; they sure know how to keep their party members in-line. I find it simply unbelievable that not one Republican Representative is not in favor of this bill out of 242 Republican Representatives in the House. Say it however you want…0% of the Republicans have come out to co-sponsor this bill. Not a single moderate Republican that I am aware of has even voiced support. None, zilch, nada! I find this just amazing!
In a system were our representatives are supposed to express the will of the people in their home districts, and with the Great Recession negatively impacting republican and democratic constituencies alike, I find it unfathomable that somehow every republican district somehow was able to avoid the calamity called unemployment in America today. Are you telling me that not one republican held district is suffering from above average unemployment? That not one Republican district in America is suffering from an inordinate amount of the long term unemployed, often called 99ers? Or, is this just the Republican version of tough love?
When I think of people walking in lock step, I think of the Nazi’s. I quickly reflect on the German soldiers marching in perfect unison without any sign of individuality. All united for a common purpose, and that purpose was to try to advance the aspirations of a very specific group of people, the chosen one’s, the ones that thought they were better than all the rest. The Master Race. These ideals were promoted at the cost of the death of millions of innocent victims. Our refusal today to assist our millions of 99ers that have exhausted all of their benefits in some “survival of the fittest” mentality is simply unconscionable! Where are the Republicans that should be standing up for this bill? Where are the Republicans that should be working diligently to try to find the means in the budget to pay for this drastically needed legislation? Where are they? Are they just sitting on their hands or marching in lock step? You be the judge!
I for one would think less about a conspiracy or collusion if I was to see at least a few Republicans willing to break ranks. I know that there should at least be a few if they were adequately representing their constituency, they would be compelled to do so. So where are they? When will they stand up and stand out. Or, is the fear of party retribution just too great for them to cross the isle and join in support of this very necessary and critically important bill? One would like to believe that representing their constituency would allow them to rise above party politics. So I ask one more time, where are the Republican’s that should be supporting this bill, and why aren’t they stepping up to do so?
