Now is a good time to take a look at another 2011 Fantasy Baseball Draft Overrated/Underrated feature where we take a look at two players who are similar in stats but who have been and likely will be drafted quite a few rounds apart once thespring arrives. Today we delve into the starting pitcher fraternity and will take a look at the Milwaukee Brewers’ Yovani Gallardo and the Chicago Cubs’ Ryan Dempster. Whats interesting with these two power pitchers is the fact that both had very similar stats from last season as each guy struck out more than 200 batters with a high 3.00 ERA and a WHIP above 1.30 so you would think they would both be valued around the same level for the upcoming fantasy baseball campaign. That is not the case however as Gallardo at this point through early mock drafts has seen his average drat position however in round 9 while Dempster is being picked at the end of round 12. Clearly there is some bias at play here and to see just how even these guys are, lets see last seasons stats lined up next to each other.
Dempster: 15-12 3.85 ERA 208 K 1.32 WHIP
Gallardo: 14-7 3.84 ERA 200 K 1.37 WHIP
Looking at the numbers, Dempster bested Gallardo in wins, K’s, AND WHIP. Three out of four stats speaks volumes for Dempster’s value being worthy of standing right by Gallardo but that’s just not happening. Even if you back to the 2009 season, their stats are still close.
Dempster: 11-9 3.65 ERA 172 K 1.31 WHIP Gallardo: 13-12 3.73 ERA 204 K 1.31 WHIP
Once again Dempster put up the better ERA with an standoff in WHIP, with Gallardo winning strikeouts. So once again based on the stats, these two guys should be drafted around the same place this spring but it just wont happen. The reasons for this are obvious. Gallardo is 9 years younger than Dempster and the feeling is that he still have room to grow and improve. No doubt this is true but Gallardo has shown some very serious issues in his performance such as the walks (which actually got worse last season) which prevent him from pitching deep into games and thus from winning games. His WHIP will continue to take a beating if he doesn’t rein the free passes in for sure. On top of this, Gallardo has been a horrid second half pitcher the last two seasons with ERA’s of 5.77 and 4.56 the last two seasons. I cant stand guys that go into the tank when you need them the most in order to grab a fantasy baseball title and no doubt Gallardo has ruined some title chances along the way. Dempster meanwhile has put up a 4.15 and 3.15 ERA in the second half of the last two campaigns so he once again comes out on top here.
Allow me to say that I don’t expect you or anyone else to select Ryan Dempster over Yovani Gallardo in 2011 fantasy baseball drafts. That would not be the right choice obviously based on Gallardo’s potential. The point of this feature as always is to show you that the stats haul that Gallardo supplies can be had a few rounds later at a much cheaper price so you can fill in other roster spots in the meantime which maximizes your talent on your roster. Good luck with drafting as always and feel free to post your thoughts below.
