Catcher (C) Breakout Players 2011
Carlos Santana – Cle
As the top prospect in the Indians minor league system entering the 2010 season, Santana earned himself a major league promotion in June. Busting out of the gates with the Indians that saw him tally 4 homeruns, 15 rbi, 9 doubles and a .345 batting average over 58 at bats just during the month of June, Santana seemed well on his way to earning the AL Rookie of the Year award. Unfortunately a collision at home plate in early August forced Santana to have surgery to repair ligament damage in his left knee, thus causing him to miss the remainder of his rookie season in 2010. Expected to be fully healed and healthy to begin the 2011 season, Santana is an ideal #3 hitter in the Indians lineup and should be primed for an excellent breakout season in 2011.
2010 Minor League Stats: 196 AB, 39 R, 13 HR, 51 RBI, 6 SB, .316 AVG
2010 Major League Stats: 150 AB, 23 R, 6 HR, 22 RBI, 3 SB, .260 AVG
2011 Stat Projections: 70 R, 20 HR, 85 RBI, 5 SB, .285 AVG
Matt Wieters – Bal
Entering the 2011 season as a prototypical post-hype prospect, Wieters has gone from being considered the potential #1 fantasy baseball catcher alongside Joe Mauer entering the 2010 season, to often being ranked outside the top 5 catchers in fantasy baseball leagues entering the 2011 season. Offering solid all around hitting skills and plenty of power potential, the 2011 season could finally be the year that Wieters breaks out. If you can draft Wieters anywhere after the top 5 catchers taken in your fantasy baseball draft to begin the 2011 season, you are no doubt getting great value combined with outstanding potential and upside.
2010 Major League Stats: 446 AB, 37 R, 11 HR, 55 RBI, 0 SB, .249 AVG
2011 Stat Projections: 70 R, 22 HR, 90 RBI, 2 SB, .290 AVG
Jarrod Saltalamacchia – Bos
Since an outstanding rookie season in 2005 at Single-A, Saltalamacchia has gone through his share of ups and downs. With an injury riddled history and already turning age 26 just a month into the 2011 season, Saltalamacchia appears to be in the best position of his career to finally take over as a successful starting catcher in the majors. If Saltalamacchia can stay healthy, play up to his potential and fully utilize his skill set, then his spot in the potent Red Sox lineup could easily parlay Saltalamacchia into a top 10 fantasy baseball catcher during the 2011 season.
