2010 Independence Bowl Preview
The Advocare V100 Independence Bowl will feature the top two rushing teams in the country when Georiga Tech and Air Force square off on December 27th. Air Force went 5-3 in Mountain West Conference play and finished the season with an overall record of 8-4. Air Force played 7 teams this year that will also be playing in bowl games. In those 7 games the Air Force Falcons went 3-4 with wins over BYU, Army, and Navy. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets started the season 5-2 but lost four out of the last five to finish at 6-6. This will be the 14th straight bowl appearance for Georgia Tech.
When Georgia Tech has the Ball
The Yellow Jackets have the top rushing offense in the country this year averaging 327 yards on the ground. After the injury to quarterback Josh Nesbitt, sophomore Tevin Washington has assumed the responsibilities under center. Washington will not be throwing the ball very often but he can take off and run effectively. Running back Anthony Allen had 1225 yards on the ground this year and will get the bulk of the carries. Fellow running back Orwin Smith will also get a handful of carries and you can expect him to make the most of them. Smith averaged 9.7 yards per carry and ended the regular season with 476 yards rushing.
Air Force should have no trouble preparing for a Georgia Tech offense that is similar to there own. However, preparing for it and actually stopping it are two completely different things. The Falcons defense gave up an average of 22.3 points per game this year. The Falcon defense will need to know their assignments on every play and will need to stick to their assignments in order to slow down the Yellow Jackets running attack.
When Air Force has the Ball
Air Force was second to Georgia Tech in rushing offense averaging 317.9 yards per game. Junior quarterback Tim Jefferson has been great for the Falcons this season. Jefferson threw the ball more this year than in the past and finished the year 1342 yards and 10 touchdowns. Don’t expect Air Force to go to the pass very often though as Jefferson completes on 52% of his passes and had 6 interceptions this year. Jefferson is more dangerous as a runner as evidenced by his 769 yards and 15 touchdowns. Running backs Asher Clark (1001 yards) and Nathan Walker (453) will also get carries for the Falcons.
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defense has had difficulty keeping opponents off the scoreboard. The Yellow Jackets are 60th in the nation in scoring defense giving up 26.2 points per game. The Yellow Jacket defense is coming off a disappointing performance in which they gave up 42 points to their instate rival, the Georgia Bulldogs.
2010 Advocare V100 Independence Bowl Prediction
I am looking forward to watching these two rushing teams in action against each other. With both teams running on just about every down this game should go by pretty quickly. Even though neither quarterback will be throwing the ball very often I still think they are the key to this game. Tim Jefferson of Air Force has a lot more experience than Tevin Washington and he is a better passer. Jefferson averages 5.4 yards per carry and his tough running will lead the Falcons to victory.
Prediction: Air Force 27 – Georgia Tech 20
