I love small decorating tips that change a room completely. As the seasons change outside, I change my home to match them. My decorating tips are cheap and easy to implement; otherwise they wouldn’t be fun. There’s little involved; although, you will need some storage space for decorative items as you rotate their use. I hope you love these ideas as much as I do, so here they are: 10 decorating tips that make a big splash.
#1. Colorful Pillow Cases
Bright-colored silk pillows will fill a room with spots of color. To implement this small decorating tip with little expense, just sew silk pillow cases to cover your existing pillows. I sewed simple square pillows cases with one side left open. Then I sewed colorful silk ribbon strips in pairs all down the fourth side, for tying the case after I put a pillow in it. I have silk pillow cases in purples, reds, yellows, blues and green. And I can mix and match them depending on my decorating mood.
#2. Colorful Candles
Colorful candles are fun to buy and to arrange in clusters throughout your home. I love the candles that come with a ceramic lamp shade. And there are candles poured inside a tree trunk, or ones with flowers or leaves trapped inside the wax. Really, there are so many colorful, beautiful candles for you to choose from.
#3. Ribboned Vases
Of course flowers offer a perfect way of adding a splash of color to your decor. I like to save money on vases by using drinking glasses as vases. I tie a wide beautiful ribbon around each glass and then I cluster the glasses to display flowers or branches from my garden.
#4. Seasonal Curtains
I love sheer colorful curtains that let the sun shine in. I have white, see-through curtains for winter, orange for fall, green for spring and yellow for summer. Luckily, in my home the curtains just slip off the rod, making it easy to replace them. And this decorating tip also reminds me to wash the curtains regularly.
#5. Live Plants
I don’t like silk plants because they gather dust and look phony, but live plants can really add a splash of color to your decor. I like the Braided Ficus or angel ivy topiaries. And here are my favorite fragrant indoor plants.
#6. Wall Art
It always amazes me, the difference wall art makes to home decorating. To implement this small decorating tip without spending money, just use the same frames again by slipping the old art out and putting the new one in. Here’s my article on creating your own wall art from old calendars.
#7. Colorful Shawls
Colorful fringe shawls are ideal for making a big splash. Hang the shawls over the valance of your blinds to festoon beautiful. Use shawls to cover your tables, the backs of furniture, the top of your mantle. Then change the shawls to match the color of your decor. There are no rules to this decorating tip so have fun with it.
#8. Colorful Rugs
Think of the rug in a room as a pond on which your furniture is floating. Everything in the room is affected by the color of this pond. Look for cheap, thin rugs that you can spread over your carpet or floor. Have two or three rugs and rotate their use to give your decor a big splash of change.
#9. Colorful Lamps
Changing my table lamps creates a brand new splash of color in the room, especially when light streams from the new lamp shades. Typically I’ll use the same lamp and just change the lamp shade, but sometimes I’ll slip the lamp into a bigger, colorful container, like a hug milk jug that I painted in purple.
Mirrors increase light in the room, changing the way colors look. Mirrors also duplicate the space, changing the apparent size of a room. In winter I replace two of my wall paintings with a large mirror to increase the light in the room. In summer I place a mirror in the space between my windows to make the room seem larger. I also frame small mirrors in cheap frames that I paint to match my decor. Then I display my little mirrors on side tables and my mantle. I recommend playing around with mirrors as part of your home decorating adventure.
