Season of the Witch – Here’s one of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 for fans of swords, the supernatural, and sorcery. Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman star as Crusaders who return home to find their world ravaged by the Plague, a plight that church elders believe is the fault of a young witch. And so the two knights embark on a journey with the mysterious girl to a monastery where monks will try to put an end to her curse, however, you can bet it’s not going to be an easy trek with a wily witch doing whatever she can to stop them. The casting here is great, and there seems to be plenty of spooky moments in the trailer, making this one of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 for horror movie fans and those that enjoy good period pieces.

The Green Hornet – This is one of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 for fans of superhero flicks, and the perfect start to a 2011 loaded with them. Sure Seth Rogen’s masked avenger hasn’t been getting as much attention as the other green guy starring in a 2011 superhero movie, but there’s plenty to look forward to in this more humorous take on crime-fighting with Michel Gondry directing. The Black Beauty will make its film debut; Cameron Diaz will star as the love interest (obsessed with “CSI”-like shows); and, best of all, Christoph Waltz will be playing the city’s chief criminal. So while it might not end up being one of the best upcoming superhero movies of 2011, it definitely has its selling points.
The Dilemma – If you like comedies, then this is one of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 for you (that is, if you can get past that whole scandal involving the use of the word “gay”). It’s nice to see Winona Ryder quietly continue her comeback after “Black Swan”, with a bigger role here as a cheating spouse. When Vince Vaughn’s character spots her being untrue to his best friend (Kevin James), he’s faced with quite the dilemma: does he tell his friend and break his heart, or keep it a secret? The film definitely has the star power with its cast that also includes with Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum, and Queen Latifah, but it’s hard to imagine this is one of Ron Howard’s best (it’s a shame he didn’t go for the R rating). Still, there could be laughs to be had in one of the few funny upcoming movies of January 2011, so it might be worth checking out (if you can ever stop thinking about how much Kevin James looks like Elena Kagan).
Barney’s Version – This is one of the upcoming movies of January 2011 that’s in limited release, but it’s usually worth checking out anything with Paul Giamatti if you get the chance. This one is about a TV producer reflecting on his life, which includes three ex-wives and being a “person of interest” in his best friend’s disappearance. With a cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver, and Dustin Hoffman, there’s definitely some promise here, and it makes a great alternative for those wanting to take a break from mainstream movies.

The Company Men – This is one of the upcoming movies of January 2011 that a lot of people can relate to. Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, and Chris Cooper star as three men laid off by their company that are forced to ask themselves the tough question “what now?”. The subject matter definitely makes this one seem like it was pushing for some Oscar love, but it remains to be seen if audiences can fall in love with this take on tough times (don’t most go to the movies to escape them?).
The Way Back – Here’s another of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 that could be really good without necessarily being a crowd-pleaser (if that makes any sense). The film is set during World War II and focuses on a group of soldiers attempting to escape from a Siberian gulag to the safety of India. It’s based on a true story, which definitely gives it some appeal, and it has an apt cast in Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, and Ed Harris. It may not become a classic like “The Great Escape”, but it definitely looks grittier (and more realistic).
No Strings Attached – After their “Black Swan” showdown, Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman will face off again with dueling upcoming romantic comedies of 2011 about “Friends with Benefits” (the title of Mila Kunis’ movie with the same premise). But Natalie Portman is up first playing a monogamy-bashing doctor who starts a sex-only relationship with her best guy friend (Ashton Kutcher). Of course he falls for her, and things start getting complicated. Sure the plot is predictable, but it’s easy to watch Natalie Portman in anything (even a January movie).

The Mechanic – For those that like action, this is one of the must-see upcoming movies of January 2011 for you. The “Con Air” director’s latest is the story of an assassin (Jason Statham) forced to execute a close associate. However, this action seems to cause him to go rogue in a very dangerous way: by taking on the son of the man he just killed (Ben Foster) as an apprentice. So if you like plot twists and turns, guns, and complicated relationships, you might want to check this one out.
From Prada to Nada – And here’s one of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 for teen girls (especially pampered princesses). This updated version of “Sense and Sensibility” seems like it could become the Latina “Clueless” with Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega starring as spoiled Beverly Hills beauties that become penniless when their father dies. The girls, who have basically ignored their Mexican heritage their whole lives, are forced to move in with not-as-well-off relatives in East L.A., where they learn a lot about their Latino roots and what’s really important in life. With virtually no other teen-centric upcoming movies of January 2011, this would be the best bet for girls living in our material world that need a wake-up call rather than another trip to the mall.
The Rite – And here’s one of the best upcoming movies of January 2011 for exorcism fans. Colin O’Donoghue stars as a disillusioned seminary student learning about the dark side of his religion by attending an exorcism school at the Vatican, while Anthony Hopkins plays the priest that teaches him about the pure evil that exists in the world. Of course you know all hell breaks loose, making for some creepy moments in one of the best upcoming movies of 2011 for those searching for scares.
So from the supernatural and superheroes to sexual relations and the big job problem in our nation, the upcoming movies of January 2011 have a little something for all film fans.
