The #1 Eastern Super Buffet is located at 1901 S. Signal Butte Road, Suite 101, Mesa, Arizona 85209. It is within an outdoor shopping center, in the North corner behind the gas station and car wash, with adequate free parking.
I have been there about 10 times during this past year with various family members and friends. One of the reasons why we eat there is that it is convenient to the shopping and other activities (LA Fitness, Gateway IMAX 12 Theater, Massage Envy) in the immediate area.
The #1 Eastern Super Buffet boasts that it has over 200 Chinese, Japanese, American and Italian cuisine food items freshly prepared every day, including crab legs, oysters on the half shell, sushi and a BBQ grill. In reality, most of the food items are from the Asian cuisine, with the typical Chinese and Japanese fare such as broccoli and beef, sweet and sour chicken, spring rolls, chop suey, chow mein, gyoza, tempura, etc.
Although I have never counted if they actually have 200 food items, the selection of appetizers and entrees is extensive with several different soups, a salad bar, fresh and canned fruits, vegetable, chicken, beef and pork entrees and desserts, including ice cream.
It should be noted that they offer a lunch buffet ($7.99) Monday through Saturday, a dinner buffet ($10.99) from Monday through Thursday and a weekend, holiday and all-day Sunday buffet ($12.59). Do not expect crab legs, oysters on the half shell and other expensive food items to be offered other than on the days and at the times that the $12.59 rate applies.
Nonetheless, it is always “all you can eat” and there is a very good selection of primarily Asian dishes that are fairly true to their flavor and above average in quality for the most part. A few of the dishes are really outstanding. Except for a few items, the food is, indeed, prepared fresh and replenished frequently, often just as soon as a particular item runs out.
It is self serve, except for beverages which are at an extra charge but the soft drinks are reasonably priced with free refills. Beer and wine is also served.
The service is friendly and quite excellent. Dirty dishes are taken away almost immediately so they do not pile up at your table. Soft drinks and water is refilled promptly. Seating is average but comfortable enough and the food area, dining area, as well as the restrooms, are generally very clean, well lit and well maintained.
The two best things that the #1 Eastern Supper Buffet has going for it (in my opinion) is the sushi bar and the Mongolian barbecue grill. The sushi bar is almost constantly attended by a chef who prepares the sushi and sashimi as needed and, hence, it is very fresh. The Mongolian barbecue grill is also “mostly” staffed. I say “mostly” because the chef was not around several times when I was there. At the barbecue grill, you select the meat, vegetables and sauce and it is cooked up for you while you wait.
It can get very busy and noisy, with a cafeteria like atmosphere, especially during the winter months when out-of-state visitors are in the greater Phoenix area and particularly on the weekends. Depending on the actual time you go, you can expect a short wait on the weekends. Private rooms are available for group birthday and other parties, and events. A buffet as well as a set take out menu is also available.
All in all, I have always been satisfied with the selection, taste and quality of the food as well as the service. I would recommend this buffet if you are hungry and like Asian food. The value is very good, but if you do not necessarily like crab legs, oysters and/or some of the other expensive food items that are offered on the days and at the times that the $12.59 rate applies, you may want to visit when the lower rates apply.
If you are a senior, don’t forget to ask the cashier for a 10% discount at the time you pay. Also, look for 15% off coupons in the local newspapers.
